Where do I start?

There are lots of ways you can make choices about the food you buy and eat in order to have a lighter impact. Here are our top tips for starters:

1) Join the Tweeddale Food Campaign and commit to eating 1, 2 or more meals per week solely from local, seasonal produce

2) Choose fruit and veg that are locally grown and in-season. The easiest way to do this is often via a veg box scheme. Sign up to Broccoli Green’s veg box delivery service on Peebles High Street or become a Whitmuir supporter and have your fruit and veg delivered by them.

3) Where food is imported, e.g. coffee, sugar, bananas, choose Fair Trade products

4) Eat less meat and dairy. Where you do choose these, ensure these are from a high quality source with good welfare credentials

5) Buy organic where you can. Start by making a commitment to choosing organic for your staples (e.g. wheat products, dairy)

6) Plan your shopping around the meals you wish to make. This will help you not to waste food or to waste money!

To help you on your journey to eating more local food, we have put together a Local Food Directory which outlines local food producers and where you can buy their products in the Tweeddale area. The Directory will shortly be available to download here. Bookmark

We are also in the process of producing a recipe book, with local seasonal recipes. Contact us to receive a draft version of this book, or to let us know of any recipes of your own.
