FREE Local Food Directory and Recipe Book
Following on from the success of Tweedgreen’s 50-50 Local Food Challenge in October 2009, the Food Group have written and published two short books to help people increase their consumption of locally sourced food: The Tweedgreen Local Food Directory and The Tweedgreen Recipe Book. We invite you to join our ongoing 50-50 Local Food Challenge: eating a meal a week or more from food only grown within a 50 mile radius of Peebles.
The Directory aims to pull together information about all sources of locally produced food to make it easily available for everyone. The Directory, and the companion volume, The Recipe Book, should make it possible to reduce the food miles of your purchases, lower your carbon footprint and support local businesses, particularly farmers.
We all take for granted an extraordinary abundance and variety of foods available all year round. With fruit and vegetables travelling thousands of miles to reach us, seasons no longer exist in the supermarket! Learning what can really be grown locally, and at what time of year is a challenge. The difficulty in sourcing all our staples from a 50 mile radius helps to highlight the fragility of our current food production and distribution methods. Through the 50-50 challenge we helped build a sense of community amongst the participants and their suppliers. Our small local shopkeepers are keen to help with sourcing products from the Borders and Lothians. Please talk to them about items you would like to buy. It might need a few of you to request the same things to ensure it is viable for them to buy-in stock, but don’t let that put you off asking.
FREE copies of the books are now available in most local shops, including: Deli Beans, Broccoli Green, Forsyth’s and The Sunflower. Copies are also available at The Whistlestop Cafe and The Corner Shop (Innerleithen), Floors Castle (Kelso), Whitmuir Organics (La Mancha), Cardrona Village Store and Cardrona village hall.
You can also pick up a free copy at our office (Tweedgreen, The Bridge, Newby Court, High Street, Peebles, EH45 8AL).
